If you’re in the Kansas City Metro staring at a car with hail dents, rust bubbles, a cracked windshield, or accident damage and wondering, “Can I still donate this?” the answer is yes. With Wheels for Good, body damage does not disqualify your vehicle. Heritage for the Blind accepts cars in any cosmetic condition, running or not. Whether you’re in Overland Park, Independence, Gladstone, or Waldo, we’ll arrange free pickup and you’ll receive a tax receipt.
Here’s how it really works in Missouri: your damaged car is towed at no cost to you, then sold at auction or for parts, depending on its condition. The actual sale price—not how rough it looks in your driveway—determines the final donation value. Heavily damaged vehicles may sell for less, which means a smaller deduction, but your minimum guaranteed receipt is still $500. If it sells for more, you can claim the higher amount using IRS Form 1098‑C. You do not need to fix the dents, glass, or rust first. We handle the logistics so Heritage for the Blind can receive support, and you can finally clear that damaged car out of your driveway, garage, or street parking in places like Brookside, North Kansas City, or Lee’s Summit.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Start online or by phone and share the basics: year, make, model, and a simple description of the body damage—hail dents, rust, cracked windshield, accident or storm damage. You don’t need a mechanic’s report; just be honest about what you see so we can route it to the right Kansas City area tow partner and plan the most convenient pickup time.
2. Schedule a free pickup anywhere in the KC Metro
We arrange free towing from your home, workplace, or shop in the Kansas City Metro—whether that’s Olathe, Raytown, Liberty, Shawnee, or downtown KCMO. The car can be non‑running, missing glass, or visibly damaged. Our driver will handle loading and hauling; you won’t be charged a dime for towing, parking lot fees, or extra handling because of the damage.
3. Sign a few quick documents at pickup
At pickup, you’ll sign the title and a simple release so the vehicle can be sold for the benefit of Heritage for the Blind. If your title is damaged or you’re unsure how to sign Missouri or Kansas paperwork, we’ll walk you through it. The tow driver will give you a receipt noting that Wheels for Good has taken possession of your vehicle.
4. We sell your car in its current condition
Your vehicle is taken to auction or a licensed buyer who regularly handles damaged and high‑mileage cars. We do not repair the dents, rust, or broken glass first—this keeps the process fast and free for you. The market ultimately decides what it’s worth in its current condition, and those sale proceeds go to support Heritage for the Blind’s programs.
5. Receive your tax receipt and claim your deduction
You’ll receive a written tax receipt. No matter how bad the body damage is, your minimum guaranteed deduction is $500. If the car sells for more than $500, you can typically deduct the higher sale amount using IRS Form 1098‑C. Consult your tax advisor for how to claim the deduction on your federal return using the documents we provide.
6. Enjoy a clear driveway and a clear conscience
Once it’s gone, that damaged car is no longer eating up space in your driveway off Ward Parkway or your apartment lot in Westport. You’ve avoided repair headaches, towing costs, and dealing with private buyers—and you’ve turned a problem vehicle into meaningful support for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind.
Potential complications to watch for
Badly cracked or missing windshield and windows
Tip: Severe glass damage is okay for donation, but it can affect how the vehicle is transported and sold. Let us know if windows or the windshield are missing or shattered so our Kansas City tow partner can bring the right equipment and plan a safe pickup without delays or rescheduling.
Very heavy collision or frame damage
Tip: Major accident or frame damage can mean your car is only valuable for parts or scrap. You can still donate, and pickup is still free, but the sale price—and thus your final deduction—may be lower. You’ll still receive at least a $500 tax receipt, with documentation if the sale value exceeds that amount.
Missing title or out-of-state paperwork
Tip: In Missouri and Kansas, a title is usually required to transfer ownership, even on a damaged car. If your title is lost or from another state, tell us upfront. We’ll explain how to request a duplicate title or handle out-of-state paperwork so your donation doesn’t stall at the last minute.
Car stuck at a shop, impound, or apartment lot
Tip: If your damaged vehicle is sitting at a body shop, tow yard, or restricted apartment parking in the Kansas City area, we can often still pick it up. We may need contact info or written permission from the lot owner or manager. Share those details early so we can coordinate access and avoid storage or impound complications.
