If your car has been sitting in Brookside, Independence, Overland Park, or anywhere in the Kansas City Metro with expired registration, you can still donate it. In almost every case, lapsed or expired tags do NOT stop your donation. What matters for Wheels for Good is that you have a valid Missouri or Kansas title in your name—not current plates or stickers. You don’t have to stand in line at the DMV, pay back registration, or make the car drivable. We’ll handle the vehicle; you support Heritage for the Blind and get a tax-deductible receipt.
Here’s how it works in Missouri and Kansas: once you submit your donation, we schedule a free tow from your driveway, garage, or a shop anywhere around the metro—North Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Olathe, Blue Springs, Liberty, you name it. The tow driver collects your signed title; your expired registration stays your problem only until the title is transferred. After pickup, the vehicle becomes our responsibility. You should simply notify your state DMV of the transfer to cut off future liability like tickets or personal property tax. You still receive a tax receipt, typically for at least $500, and donations over $500 use IRS Form 1098‑C.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have the title (not current tags)
Find your Missouri or Kansas vehicle title and make sure your name matches the registration. The tags can be expired—that doesn’t matter. If there’s a lien listed, check that it’s released. No need to renew or pay back registration; we only need a valid, signed title to complete your donation to Wheels for Good in Kansas City.
2. Submit your donation in a few simple minutes
Provide basic info about the car—year, make, model, VIN, and where it’s parked in the Kansas City Metro (house in Waldo, apartment in Midtown, storage in Lenexa, etc.). Tell us the registration is expired so our towing partner knows it isn’t being driven. We’ll answer any questions about paperwork on the spot.
3. Schedule free towing anywhere in the KC Metro
We arrange a free tow that fits your schedule, whether the car is in your driveway in Gladstone, a lot in Independence, or a shop in Shawnee. The vehicle does not need to run, and you don’t need plates on it. Our towing partner comes with the right paperwork so you can hand everything off in one easy visit.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if you have them)
At pickup, you’ll sign the title to transfer ownership to Wheels for Good or our authorized agent. We’ll help you know exactly where to sign for Missouri or Kansas. Keys are helpful but not always required for non-running, expired‑tag vehicles. Once the car is on the truck, it’s no longer your responsibility.
5. Notify your DMV of the transfer for peace of mind
After towing, we recommend you file a notice of sale/transfer with the Missouri DOR or Kansas DMV, depending on where the car is titled. This step is quick and helps ensure you’re not responsible for future tickets, fees, or taxes. From that point on, the vehicle and its registration status are off your plate.
6. Receive your tax receipt and make an impact
Once the vehicle is processed, Wheels for Good sends you a tax receipt. In most cases you can deduct at least $500; higher values use IRS Form 1098‑C. Your gift helps fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind, all from that expired‑registration car in your Kansas City driveway.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged title, even though registration is expired
Tip: Expired tags are usually fine, but a missing title can slow things down. If your Missouri or Kansas title is lost, you may need to request a duplicate from the DOR/DMV before we can complete your donation. We can explain what info you’ll need so you only make one trip.
Active lien still listed on the title
Tip: If a lender is still listed on the title and not clearly released, we generally can’t transfer the vehicle yet, even if the registration has been expired for years. Contact the lender or DMV to clear the lien. Once that’s done, we can move forward without you paying any back registration fees.
Title name doesn’t match the current owner
Tip: If the car was inherited, gifted, or bought but never properly retitled, the name on the title must be corrected first. Registration status doesn’t fix that. We’ll explain the basic Missouri or Kansas steps so you can update the title, then donate without renewing the tags or paying penalties.
HOA, apartment, or city rules on inoperable/expired‑tag cars
Tip: Some HOAs, apartment complexes, or city codes around Kansas City don’t allow long‑term parking of expired‑tag vehicles. Let us know if you’re under a deadline or have received notices. We’ll prioritize pickup and coordinate towing so you can avoid fines and clear the spot quickly at no cost.
