Donate Your Car by Dec 31 in Kansas City for 2024 Taxes

In Kansas City, it takes about two minutes to start. Schedule your free tow on your timeline, lock in your IRS deduction with a Dec 31 pickup, and support people who are blind—start now before slots fill.

If your car is picked up on or before December 31 in the Kansas City Metro, the IRS counts your donation for this tax year—even if the vehicle sells weeks later. With Wheels for Good, you can start in under two minutes: fill out our simple online form or call our donation line, confirm your free tow time with our coordinator, sign the title at pickup, and you’re done. Your official IRS acknowledgment (Form 1098-C or written receipt) is mailed within 30 days of the sale.

Wheels for Good partners with Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3), to turn your car into support for people who are blind or visually impaired. We serve the entire Kansas City Metro—downtown, Midtown, Brookside, Waldo, the Northland, Overland Park, Olathe, Lee’s Summit, Independence, Blue Springs and beyond. Most pickups in the metro happen the same day or next business day, Monday through Saturday, and your car doesn’t need to run, pass inspection, or have current registration. If you’re ready to donate, skip the research spiral and lock in your year-end tax deduction now—before December 31 pickup slots are gone.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start your donation (about 2 minutes)

2 minutes

Submit our quick online form or call Wheels for Good, benefiting Heritage for the Blind. Share your basic contact info, vehicle location in the Kansas City Metro, and car details. Once you hit submit or finish the call, your donation process is officially underway for this tax year.

2

Get a fast scheduling call-back

Within 1–2 business hours (weekdays)

A local coordinator calls you back, usually within 1–2 hours on weekdays, to confirm your information and schedule your free tow. Tell us you need pickup by December 31 so we can prioritize an available slot that locks in this year’s tax deduction.

3

Lock in your pickup date and time

Same day or next business day in most of KC

We coordinate a free licensed tow truck to your home, office, or shop—whether you’re in Overland Park, Olathe, North Kansas City, Raytown, or Lee’s Summit. Once your pickup is set for any time on or before Dec 31, your deduction year is effectively locked, pending successful pickup.

4

Free tow and title transfer at pickup

15–20 minutes at your vehicle

On pickup day, the tow driver meets you at the vehicle, checks your ID, and has you sign the title over. Your car can be non-running, damaged, or unregistered. When the truck leaves with your vehicle on or before Dec 31, that is the IRS donation date for this year.

5

Vehicle sale and tax receipt mailing

Receipt within 30 days of sale

Heritage for the Blind arranges the sale of your vehicle. After it sells, we mail you IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment, typically within 30 days of the sale. You’ll use that document when you file your return and itemize your deduction.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 pickup sets this year’s tax year

For IRS purposes, the donation date is when your vehicle is picked up, not when it sells. If your car is towed away on or before December 31, you can generally claim the deduction on this year’s return.

Form 1098-C for larger deductions

If your car sells for more than the IRS threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098-C. This shows the gross sale price, which you use when claiming your deduction and attaching documentation to your return.

Deduction usually equals sale price

In most cases, the amount you can deduct is the actual sale price of your donated vehicle, not the blue book value. Your 1098-C or acknowledgment letter will clearly list this sale amount for your tax records.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To benefit from a charitable car donation, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A rather than take the standard deduction. Talk with your tax advisor about whether itemizing this year makes sense for your situation.

30-day acknowledgment requirement

IRS rules require that you receive a written acknowledgment within 30 days of the vehicle’s sale in many situations. Heritage for the Blind mails this promptly so you’re ready when it’s time to file your taxes.

FAQ

If my car is picked up on December 31, can I claim it on this year’s taxes?
Yes. The IRS considers the donation date to be when the vehicle is transferred to the charity or its agent. For car donations, that’s the physical pickup date. As long as your car is actually towed away on or before December 31, you can generally claim the deduction for this tax year, even if it sells in January.
How fast can you pick up my car in the Kansas City Metro?
In most of the Kansas City Metro—Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, Independence, Lee’s Summit, North Kansas City, Blue Springs—we can arrange same-day or next-business-day pickup, Monday through Saturday. During late December, slots fill quickly, so start the form or call as soon as you’re ready and tell us you need pickup before December 31.
Does my car need to run or pass inspection to donate?
No. We accept most vehicles whether they run or not. Your car doesn’t need current inspection, registration, or insurance to be donated. As long as there is a valid, transferable title and safe access for the tow truck, we can usually arrange a free pickup anywhere in the Kansas City area and surrounding suburbs.
What paperwork do I need at pickup in Missouri or Kansas?
You’ll need the vehicle title and a valid ID. At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind’s authorized agent. Our team can walk you through where to sign for Missouri or Kansas titles. After that, keep your receipt and the 1098-C or acknowledgment we mail for your tax records; no other forms are required at pickup.
When will I get my tax receipt or Form 1098-C?
After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment, typically within 30 days of the sale. This document shows the sale price and confirms your donation. You don’t need to wait for it to schedule pickup—just keep it with your records when you file your taxes.
Can I still donate my car if it’s parked at a shop or different address?
Yes. We can usually pick up from your home, work, a repair shop, or storage lot anywhere in the Kansas City Metro, as long as the location allows towing access. Just provide the exact address, contact info for any third party if needed, and we’ll coordinate the tow to make sure it’s picked up by December 31 when timing is critical.
Who benefits from my donation through Wheels for Good?
Your vehicle donation supports Heritage for the Blind, a registered 501(c)(3) organization (EIN 58-2164446). Proceeds help fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired. You receive free pickup, an easy process, and a tax acknowledgment, while your unwanted car is turned into meaningful support for individuals who need it.
